Mile one of this year’s San Francisco Marathon is both beautiful and quiet, with no significant peaks or valleys for a perfect warm up into the 26-mile race.
The elevation point, starting at our historical SF Financial District at 26’ ends at Coit Tower at 11’, passing by the bay and the wonderful sounds of our local resident sea lions. This first mile takes you between the sleeping Financial District on your left and the sun rising over San Francisco Bay on your right.
There are several historic landmarks you can expect to pass and view in mile one. See the end of this post for a live video of Mile 1!
San Francisco Marathon Course: Mile One landmarks
On your right at race start is the historic Ferry Clock, the centerpiece of the Ferry Building.. Built in 1898 as a wind-up clock, now electronic, was resurrected to support this terminal of ferries and San Francisco local residents as a meeting and commerce point.
There is also a set of horn loudspeakers above the clock that play Westminster Chimes on the hour and make a loud siren noise every Tuesday at noon on the hour.
On your left is the newest addition to San Francisco’s skyline. The SalesForce Tower, a San Francisco based tech company, employing over 69,000 people worldwide, The SF Tower is 1,070’ making it the 2nd tallest building West of the Mississippi behind the Wilshire Grand Center in Los Angeles.
As you start running, you will pass Pier 7, one of the most beautiful piers in the City that you have seen countless times in movies, TV and commercials. You may recognize the area for such films filmed there as “Ant Man”, “Basic Instinct” and more.
A bit beyond you will pass San Francisco’s Exploratorium, our in-depth local science museum. Take the family there during your stay in SF if you are visiting for the Marathon! They have hundreds of exhibits that can’t been seen anywhere by our lovely bay area city! The museum opens just in time for SF Marathon in July 2022!
As you run towards mile two, you will rise up past The Coit Tower ises up on your left. Located in Pioneer Park, an art deco tour built in 1923 for the city. As you pass North Beach you will enjoy sweeping views of the city and the Bay. The sea lions will applaud you from the wharf!
