Mile 18 of the Marathon goes around the historic Stow Lake, completed in 1893 in Golden gate Park. It’s Golden Gate Park’s largest body of water and was designed for leisure boating, a promenade for horse-drawn carriages, and to serve as a reservoir for park irrigation.
The island in the middle of the lake, Strawberry Hill, is named for the wild strawberries that once grew there. This lake is beuatifully surrounded by Redwoods, Cyprus & Pine trees. It is home to ducks, Canadian Geese, and Great Blue Herons. You may even spot a turtle or two!
There are also great views of the Financial District and San Francisco’s skyline from this area. An excellent mile for runners to enjoy nature and spectators to get a great feel of where nature hits the city. A must see!
